BEST OF 2001, BY DAVID PIERSON

Before I start listing my favorite videos for the year, I would like to wish all of you a happy, prosperous and safe 2002. (What ever happened to that Y2K thing?) This has been a difficult year for those of us living in The United States. Since the 09/11/01 tragedies, life has taken on a surreal quality. What has made it possible for many of us to go on is the way that we responded to this outrage as a people. The outpouring of generosity from our citizens is unprecedented. I'll bet that many of you would be surprised to know that many of the production houses that produce your favorite spanking videos were also very generous with their money. I think that they should be commended for that.
This generosity emanates from an industry that many regard as obscene. I regard most of the creative people who make spanking videos to be real artists and not purveyors of the obscene. Unlike most forms of adult entertainment, the spanking video requires much in the way of a creative process. There has to be a plot or scenario that the viewer can accept as plausible (at least within the universe in which the video is set), otherwise the production would be as interesting as shopping at K-Mart. The performers in the video must be able to act and deliver their lines in a believable way (even if that line is ouch!) and the videography must be of a high quality.
I see the spanking video as today's underground cinema. In the 1960's and 1970's there were filmmaker's like Andy Warhol (Ciao Manhattan) and John Waters (Pink Flamingos) who were pushing the envelope. Now, Andy Warhol is dead and John Waters makes big budget films. (Granted, he still films his movies in Baltimore, Maryland.)
In Andy Warhol's " Frankenstein" the actor Udo Kier, in the role of the demented Dr. Frankenstein, shouted " To know life you must fuck it in the gall bladder!!!". He then proceeded to do just that to the, as yet, unanimated monster. Words to live by.
I suppose that the ethic of today's spanking cinema could be " To know life you must first smack it on the ass!!". Perhaps not.
